St Peter’s Court Residents – Revitalising the Common Room

Residents of St Peter’s Court in Torry have been making the most of their newly revitalised common room, supported by a £2,000 grant from the Community & Coast Fund. The project, delivered in partnership with Castlehill Housing Association, has provided new resources and equipment to encourage tenants to use the space more actively and to support a growing programme of social activities.

The funding has enabled the purchase of kitchenware, binoculars, a telescope, and recreational items that can be enjoyed collectively. These resources have helped tenants re-establish the common room as a welcoming and functional space for both everyday use and organised events. Activities such as themed coffee mornings, informal gatherings, and opportunities to observe local wildlife or enjoy views of Aberdeen Harbour — including the arrival of the Tall Ships Races — have already been popular with residents.

Castlehill Housing staff note that the improvements have acted as a catalyst, encouraging tenants to take the lead in planning activities and making fuller use of the facilities. There is now strong interest in expanding the programme, with discussions about hosting open days, stalls, and other community events.

Catherine Coutts, Tenant Participation Officer at Castlehill Housing Association, explained: “The tenants wanted to use their communal area more and host social activities for all the residents. They felt they didn’t have enough resources and the communal room wasn’t really being used much before. Now we have been able to give them a starting point.”

Dawn Allardyce, Scheme Coordinator for St Peter’s Court, added: “The funding has really acted as a catalyst to get them started. There’s definitely a lot of enthusiasm now, and it’s wonderful to see tenants using the communal space, smiling and having fun.”

The impact has been equally clear from the perspective of residents themselves, who have spoken positively about the chance to meet new people, try out new activities, and feel more connected within the building. As one resident, Patricia, summed up: “By receiving this funding, it makes residents feel special and valued. Seeing people socialise, enjoy the activities and feel included really makes the days feel meaningful here.”
